Lock-out, Tag-out, Try-out (LOTOTO) is a highly visible best practice control method used to locate, identify, isolate, single, or multiple points of hazard that could harm employees if the hazard was to re-energise, shift via stored energy or be overridden manually or otherwise.
It's estimated that 120 fatalities and around 50,000 injuries every year are prevented directly due to the correct use of LOTOTO on hazardous energy1. Yet it still seems to be only used to a fraction of the levels that it should be.
When LOTOTO is implemented correctly, it can reduce downtime, and increase productivity. It's also an effective low-cost solution to reduce the risks involved when maintaining, cleaning, or repairing equipment, preventing accidents occurring and saving lives.
Have you implemented LOTOTO equipment? Do you have an energy control programme, with procedures in place? When was it last reviewed, and do you have the right control methods in place?
