First Aid Room

With over 7,000 non-fatal workplace injuries in Ireland every year, learn about the importance of first aid rooms and what supplies to stock.

If someone is injured or taken ill in any workplace, would you have the equipment, facilities, and personnel to provide them with the instant care they need?

As an employer, you must make arrangements to ensure that employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work. The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 state that "an employer shall provide one or, as appropriate, more first aid rooms at every place of work under the employer’s control where the size of undertaking, the type of scale of activity being carried out and the frequency of accidents so require".

First Aid Room Requirements

A well-designed first aid room should contain the essential first aid kit, as well as providing a suitable workplace environment where employees can be treated. They are usually necessary in workplaces where there are higher levels of risk, such as chemical industries or on large construction sites and in larger premises that are a distance away from medical services. A designated person should be given the responsibility for supervising it and the room should be clearly signposted and identified by white lettering or symbols on a green background.

According to the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) first aid rooms should meet the following minimum conditions:

  • Have an occupational first aider who is responsible for the upkeep of the first aid toom so as to ensure that it is kept stocked to the required standard and that at all times is clean and ready for immediate use
  • Should be large enough to hold a couch, space for people to work around it, and a chair
  • Have an entrance wide enough to accommodate an ambulance trolley, stretcher, wheelchair or carrying chair
  • Be clearly identified as a first aid room by means of a sign
  • Have a telephone or other suitable means of communication should be provided
If the first aid room(s) cannot be reserved exclusively for giving first aid, employers need to make sure that the first aid facilities can be made available quickly if necessary.
