Types of Energy
Dangerous energy sources can take many forms, including:
Electrical Energy
Commonly found powering nearly all workplace equipment
Hydraulic Energy
Stored within a pressurised liquid. When under pressure, the fluid can be used to move heavy objects, machinery, or equipment. Examples include automotive car lifts, forklifts, injection moulding machines, power presses, cutting equipment and pumps.
Mechanical Energy
Contained in an item under tension, for example a spring that is compressed or coiled will have stored energy which will be released in the form of movement when the spring expands. Can be found in all machinery with moving parts.
Thermal Energy
Commonly found in ovens or freezers (hot or cold)
Pneumatic Energy
Most commonly found powering machinery via compressed air or gas
Potential Energy
Found in compressed springs or suspended weights
Lock-out Tag-out Try-out Programme
A well-designed Lock-out Tag-out Try-out programme ensures all the necessary procedures are correctly written and followed.
All procedures for the control of hazardous energy including planning for preparation for shutdown, equipment isolation, lockout device application, release of stored energy and verification of energy isolation of equipment should be identified and written out.
Isolation involves following the correct steps to disconnect or block all energy sources to make equipment safe to work on without the risk of the machine being re-activated when it shouldn't.
Find out about the steps involved for a successful equipment isolation and re-activation once maintenance, repairs or cleaning has been completed.
As a best practice, Lock-out Tag-out Try-out is an effective way to protect employees from an unexpected start-up of equipment. Learn about the regulations and your legal obligations as an employer.
