Keeping 700 Climbers Safe and Operational in All Weathers

Dave Chatwin, Telecoms

As a Key Account Manager specialising in Telecoms, my role is to help customers keep large teams of engineers safe and minimise downtime by ensuring all their training, medical and equipment is fully up to date and compliant.

With a background in safety services my expertise is particularly important when it comes to helping customers keep teams of up to 700 climbers working safely across the country at heights up to 120m above ground in all weather conditions.

Keeping Customers Safe, Compliant and Efficient

We work in partnership with our customers and are fully integrated into their organisation and health and safety culture. For our largest customer, we provide a complete managed service for all their working at height training and equipment, as well as expert teams who can carry out PAT testing and inspect lifting and lowering equipment and ladders. We have the in-house expertise to undertake whatever they need to keep engineers as safe and fully operational as possible.

We also keep them compliant with weekly and monthly reports to highlight any medical or training issues, confirm that PPE inspections are in date, forecast when equipment will reach maximum lifespan and make sure that everything is fully up to date. To minimise downtime, we also carry out PAT testing while engineers are doing their training.

Unbiased Support and Advice

A good example of how we helped clients to solve challenges was when the legislation for Roads and Street Works for telecoms companies changed. We helped ensure that engineers have access to the right cones and barriers depending on what type of road they’re working on.

We've also helped them manage the new focus on tool tethering for working at height, providing workshops on the best equipment to use and keeping up to date on new safety innovations coming onto the market.

In the 14 years since we've worked with one client, we’ve helped them upgrade their harnesses three times, trialling new harnesses with our instructors to ensure it genuinely was worth investing in the equipment upgrade. We're not tied to any one supplier, so our customers know we'll only ever recommend the most suitable products on the market.

Pulling Out All The Stops During The Pandemic

When the Covid-19 pandemic first hit the sector, telecoms engineers were designated as key workers. However, their training was put on hold. We were able to provide extensions that meant engineers could continue to work. Then, when restrictions were eased and training could re-start, we pulled out all the stops to get all their people back in date with training and medicals inside 2 months.

What we provide helps our customers to keep their people safe, keeps telecoms companies compliant and saves them from having to employ people to manage their safety. We remove all the pain and hassle so they can concentrate on doing what they do well. That's the kind of peace of mind you can't put a price on.
