Create a flood plan, it is advisable to collate a pack of useful documents, which includes, for example, emergency telephone numbers and insurance documents. Begin to create a kit of essential items that you may need in the event of a flood. If your property is liable to flooding consider whether you may be able to protect it using either temporary barriers or more permanent fixtures.

REMOVING WATER AND MUD

 

If your property has filled with a large amount of water, you may need to hire a pump and generator to have it pumped out. Where rooms and areas have mud residue, shovel out as much as possible.

 

Rinse all floors, walls and surfaces with clean water from a garden hose, try not to use pressure hoses, as these may spread contaminated matter.

When working in flood water be aware of unseen dangers such as sharp objects, holes or dips in the ground and raised man-hole covers.

 

Switch off the electricity supply at the mains. While standing in flood water NEVER touch sources of electricity. If you need to use power tools, use battery powered tools where possible or if necessary use a portable generator.

 

Flood water is often contaminated by sewage, animal waste or even chemicals. Wear the correct equipment to protect yourself. At the very least, wear wellington boots and gloves, you may wish to invest in some waterproof outerwear if the water is deep or if you will be working in it for a long time. Prevent water from splashing in your mouth by wearing a simple face mask and protect your eyes with safety glasses or goggles.

CLEANING AND SANITISING

 

Once you have removed all of the mud and water from your property, you will need to clean all of your surfaces thoroughly. Using household detergents and cleaning equipment wipe down all surfaces, furniture and equipment where appropriate.

 

Make sure that you leave rooms to dry thoroughly, leave doors and windows open as much as possible to circulate air through the property. However if de-humidifiers are being used, you will need to keep doors and windows closed.

 

Finally fully sanitise the property using disinfectants, this will not only ensure that all contaminants have been removed it will also limit the chances of mould growth.
